Known by many names, among them Puma, Mountain Lion, and Panther, the Cougar inhabits North, South, and Central America. These majestic cats live in diverse environments from sea level to mountains. Cougars grow up to 8 feet long, stand 30 inches high, and weigh up to 176 pounds. They are powerful hunters, capable of running up to 50 mph and leaping 45 feet. Nocturnal and solitary, cougars hunt by ambush, relying on stealth to capture prey like deer and smaller animals. They are territorial, coming together only to mate. Females birth 3-4 kittens and raise them alone. Cougars face threats from habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and human persecution. The Eastern Cougar is extinct, and the Florida Panther is critically endangered with only 120-230 left. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these vital and beautiful animals.
